11 - November letter

“Making people smile.” “Being selfless.” “Giving without receiving.” “Readiness in giving.”

Once I asked a group of youth to define generosity, and these were just a few of their answers. Most teens do not have full time jobs, and only have a basic understanding of bills, 401ks, taxes, etc. It stands to reason that their perspective on what it means to be generous differs from most adults. They pointed to God as first being generous with us, and then they described how we can be generous with others, which for them was not giving financially, but rather acts of kindness and sacrifices of time.

This Fall, we have been discussing the financial status of the church, and we will be focusing on stewardship in November. When reflecting on the meaning of stewardship and what God was calling us to communicate about it, we kept coming back to the fact that it is a faith issue. God has been so generous with us- sacrificing Himself so that we can experience new life, pouring out His spirit upon us, and giving us spiritual gifts and graces, just to name a few. From His source of abundant wealth, we are called to be generous as well. With our whole hearts, we seek after God's kingdom first and lay our resources at His feet. Our generosity is rooted in God's righteousness. So when it comes to generosity, we challenge you to pray about your resources and how God is calling you to use them. It could be giving financially. It could be following the example of the youth and giving of your time and presence. Or God could be calling you in unique ways. It is all about putting Him first!

Turkey and Dressing for a Blessing

Check out the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall! We have several turkeys who have sadly lost all of their feathers, but you can help! Purchase a feather to place on the turkey of your choice. Whichever turkey receives the most feathers will get to wear them at the end of the month. Turkeys that represent our participants, feathers, and donation box are in the Fellowship Hall. Feathers are $1 apiece. You can also pay $2 to move a feather from one turkey to another. Participating turkey are Pastor Jarod, Pastor Kathy, Mark Harris, Diana Bentley, Heather Slayton, and Allen Goff. All donations will go towards the Confirmation retreat in January.

I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what you will. Rank me with whom you will. Put me to doing; put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full. Or let me be empty. Let me have all things. Or let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.   Amen
